ENABLING DECENT LIVELIHOODS THROUGH AGRIBUSINESS

Enable Youth Kenya Program

The ENABLE Youth Kenya Program aims at contributing to job creation, food and nutrition security, income generation and improved livelihoods for youth both in urban and rural areas by creating an enabling environment and opportunities for youth ‘agripreneurers’ like you to upgrade technical skills, adopt innovative agricultural practices, and access finance with a flexible program design.

The Program is funded by the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB) and is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperatives. The Program is implemented using an incubation model for agricultural entrepreneurship (agripreneurship) which entails training, nurturing, mentoring, coaching, and financing successful youth candidates.

Components

GOAL

The goal of the program is to create gainful employment, generate income and bridge succession gap in agribusiness and related value chains.

Over a period of 4 years (currently in the second year), ENABLE Youth Kenya will train and empower 2080 Agricultural Entrepreneurs (Agripreneurs) in 8 Youth Agri-Business Incubation Centres (YABICs) spread across the country. These are:

  1. Regional Pastoral Training Centre in Narok County.
  2. National Aquaculture Development Centre in Kirinyaga County.
  3. Kenya School of Agriculture in Nyeri County.
  4. Dairy Training Institute (DTI) in Nakuru County.
  5. Pwani University in Kilifi County.
  6. Kisii University in Kisii County.
  7. Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) in Kisumu County
  8. University of Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County.

The incubation activities will be conducted under two categories: Standard incubation (for unemployed graduates) and Acceleration (those already engaged in agribusiness but lack access to finance and market linkages) options. Each category is focused on specific value chains with entry nodes (agribusiness verticles). They include:

  • Supply of inputs - (including Seeds, Fertilizers, Agrochemicals, animal feeds, hatcheries, farm implements and machinery etc.)
  • Production
  • Value addition and Processing - (including animal feed formulation)
  • Trade and Marketing - (including aggregation, distribution)
  • Services - Extension, transportation, Technology, tractor hire, bailing, Artificial Insemination.

NOTE

  1. Applications are encouraged from youth involved in all nodes of the value chain encompassing supply of inputs, production, value addition and processing, trade and marketing including distribution and services.
  2. Youths who applied in year one (1) but did not succeed may re-apply.
  3. Youths should apply to only one opportunity within the Program.
  4. Shortlisted youths will be invited for interviews at the Youth Agri-Business Incubation Centre (YABIC) selected for incubation.
